Summary
[edit]DescriptionShip Canal Commons as seen from Father Baker Memorial Bridge, Buffalo, New York - 20230402.jpg |
English: As seen on a sunny afternoon in April 2023, a view eastward from the crest of the Father Baker Memorial Bridge in Buffalo, New York looks over Ship Canal Commons, a green space on the former site of the Hanna Furnace Company that's centered on and named after the former Union Ship Canal. Once a haven for lakegoing freighters unloading troves of iron ore from the Midwest or shipping newly milled pig iron to market, the site is now home to a peaceful, pleasant park that pays homage to its predecessor in a number of ways: dense groves of trees mimic the towering buildings that once lined the canal; artificial hills recall heaps of limestone and ore; its east end is anchored by a massive ladle once used to pour molten iron into molds to harden; even the pavement design of the walking paths along the canal's edge echoes the pattern of the railroads that used to be there. In the background rise some of the newly constructed warehouses of the 114-acre Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park, a new phase in the history of industry on the Buffalo waterfront. |
