Description

Sign on bow reads: 3rd Anniversary of the launching of our first vessel S.S. Niels Nielsen.

PH Coll 513.35

This would be the S.S. Crisfield, presumably shortly after it was constructed in Seattle by the Skinner & Eddy Corp, one of several 9600-DWT cargo ships built in accordance with "Design 1105". http://www.shipscribe.com/mckellar/pix/1105.html has a photo of it (apparently in Elliott Bay) with a caption written on the image, "For United States Shipping Board E.F.C. Skinner and Eddy Corp. Shipyard Seattle. Hull No. 1943. Trial trip Oct 23, 1919. 9:50 A.M. S.S. Crisfield".

According to http://shipbuildinghistory.com/shipyards/emergencylarge/skinnereddy.htm, the Niels Nielsen was delivered in November 1916 and the Crisfield in October 1919, so the timing would be right for roughly that trial trip; in any case this must be before delivery shortly thereafter to the United States Shipping Board, probably in October, imaginably in November.
