| Description | Although the first known inscription about Shibam dates from the 3rd century AD, the city was destroyed twice – once in the 13th century and once in the 16th. It was rebuilt to its present shape in the mid 1500’s and has seen very little architectural change since, due to strict building laws. That is why the 500 tall mud houses in the walled city - ranging in height from 5 to 11 stories - are often referred to as the world's first skyscrapers. |
