| Description |
English: Grave of Union soldier David Shelton along the Appalachian Trail in Madison County, North Carolina, USA. Shelton, along with his nephew William and a young scout named Millard Haire, were returning from Tennessee when they were ambushed and killed by Confederate soldiers atop Cold Spring Mountain in 1864. All three are buried a few miles west of Devil Fork Gap. Note: This incident should not be confused with the Shelton Laurel Massacre, which occurred the previous year further down the valley. |
