Summary[edit]
DescriptionShaldon Bridge Toll House - geograph.org.uk - 627228.jpg |
English: Shaldon Bridge Toll House. This toll house is located at the northern end of Shaldon Bridge and in years gone by it had a five-bar gate to bar the way for travellers across the bridge ... to bar their way until they had paid the required toll that is. No gate is possible now as too many cars are passing so close to the toll house it looks in a positively dangerous position. The photographer's grandfather used to collect the tolls from the toll keeper, but that is a few years ago now before the arrival of so much traffic along this coastal road (A379)from Torquay to Teignmouth!
Alongside the wall, and just visible behind the car bonnet, is a commemorative stone on which is carved the following:- This bridge was Projected and Designed by and Executed under the direction of ROGER HOPKINS Civil Engineer and Mineral Surveyor. Opened 8th June 1827. See 627237. |
