The maindivision of the American army of the north went into winter-quartersat Morristown, New Jersey, under the immediate personal commandof Washington, and strong detachments were stationed at WestPoint and other posts on the Hudson, and the cavalry were cantonedin Connecticut. The manifest designs of Clinton against thesouth, and the defeat of the Americans at Savannah, induced theCommander-in-chief to send a reinforcement to General Lincolnsarmy; and before the middle of December two of the North Caro-lina regiments and the whole of the Virginia line marched to thesouth, leaving the main army in quite a weak condition. Thescarcity of provisions, and the depreciated value of the continentalmoney, soon threatened a total dissolution of the army.
