English: caption: French services completely by air.
In 1934, Air France was able to operate six links France-South America by air means. The crossings of South Atlantic were done, in the two directions, three times by the land based aircraft "Arc-en-Ciel" and three times by the flying boat "Croix-du-Sud". The average cruising speed set by the two planes during these flights was 150 km/h for the seeplane and 200 km/h for the land based aircraft; hence the travel carried by air could represent a gain of 5 hours to compare to the average time of 4 days and half. Actually, in experimental phase yet, the connecting flights and the unexpected difficulties encountered have more influence on the duration of the travel than the average speed of the aircraft. Hense the best average times on the flight to South America were realized by the "Croix-du-Sud": 3 days and 17 hours. Français : Services français totalement aériens. |
