Description
English: Sediment stained the waters off of the Eastern China coast in early May 2019. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the colorful scene on May 3. From space, suspended sediment typically appears muddy tan when it floats near the surface. As it sinks, the reflective properties change and sediment can appear as shades of green. The coastal waters along China’s Jiangsu province are typically colored in shades of brown and green year-round, thanks to the large volume of suspended sediment that flows from the Yangtze, Yellow, and other rivers. Tides also play a role, stirring up sediment settled onto the relatively shallow sea floor in this region.
