30 June 2016- Chicago, Illinois- A key pillar of the strengthening the middle class in America is ensuring financial literacy, said Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez during a tour of Chicago’s Center for Economic Progress where he also discussed the impact of the U.S. Department of Labor’s recently issued conflict of interest rule. The rule requires investment advisors to work in the best interests of their retirement clients. “Today’s workers need to be educated about the three pillars to securing their financial future their savings, their pensions and social security,” Perez said. “As we move forward to strengthen retirement security we also need to continue efforts to lift wages and increase education programs that teach people how to manage their money and plan for their own futures.” Perez joined Sen. Richard Durbin, Illinois State Treasurer Michael W. Frerichs, Ariel Investments Chairman and CEO John W. Rogers, Jr., and Center for Economic Progress President and CEO David Marzahl to tour the center which provides tax and financial services to low-income, working families. Perez met with individuals like Frank Christ who has seen his FICO score rise dramatically since following steps from his financial counselors at the center who have been teaching him about financial literacy and planning for the future.
