Seattle skyline and reflected lights

English: View of Seattle lights from Puget Sound.
The reflections are interesting: Only certain lights appear as reflections,these are in many cases displaced to the left of the line from the source light to the viewer, and some lights farther above the waterline nevertheless appear as reflections closer to shore. These divergences are probably the result of long-wavelength, low-amplitude water waves on the Sound resulting in systematic variation in the angle of incidence while leaving the surface locally smooth so that the reflections appear as spots rather than streaks. Supporting this explanation, an additional faint row of reflections of the (Pier 86) grain-dock lights can be seen near the left edge of the photo, closer to the viewer. On close examination, an extended row of faint reflections can be made out running about 1/3 of the width of the picture and then visible again near the right edge. |

Photographed from the lounge of the returning ferry with the camera braced against the plexiglass window. 0.4 second exposure has some fine-scale motion blur. Camera calendar and clock were on central time, corrected here.
