Title
Seattle piers at S. Lander St., ca. 1915
Description

Transcribed from postcard: "South piers 1 and 2, Port of Seattle, at the foot of Stacy and Lander Sts. On the east waterway. These piers are 750 ft. long, 90 ft. wide. The slips are 850 x 215. A four story concrete warehouse is to be constructed hear the end of the slip. Cost of terminal complete, $1,200,000. Occupied by the American Hawaiian Steamship Company." The description provided on the postcard may be inaccurate. The 1912 Baist maps shows Piers 1 and 2 at the base of Yesler Way but newspaper articles in the Seattle Times confirm the location of the Commercial Boiler Works at the base of S. Lander St.

Above, Seattle Public Library writes, "The description provided on the postcard may be inaccurate. The 1912 Baist maps shows Piers 1 and 2 at the base of Yesler Way…" The caption on the card is correct. Piers 1 and 2 were a totally different matter from South Piers 1 and 2. Things like this were part of why the military insisted on renumbering Seattle's piers in 1944.

The rail yard here is now (2022) Seattle International Gateway (SIG) Intermodal Facility.
