Description

Page 181 of brochure Seattle and the Orient (1900). This page contains text and a group of three photos (with decorative background) collectively captioned "The Seattle Daily Times—Views of the composing room." This is part of a long section on The Seattle Daily Times, publisher of the brochure/booklet. The newspaper is now known simply as the Seattle Times.

The three photos are also individually captioned (top to bottom):

  • "Section of the composing room"
  • "Linotypes in operation"
  • "Another section of composing room

p. 181 of Seattle and the Orient (more properly, Seattle …and the… Orient), a 1900 "souvenir" pamphlet edited and compiled by Alfred D. Bowen and published by The Times Printing Company (that is, the Seattle Times).

Scanned at 300 dpi; images cleaned up using Picture Publisher's "remove pattern" feature.

Image:Seattle Daily Times composing room 01 - 1900.jpg, Image:Seattle Daily Times linotype - 1900.jpg, and Image:Seattle Daily Times composing room 02 - 1900.jpg are the respective photos. The layout on the original page left these photos slightly overlapped, so that there are intrusions of the middle photo into the top and bottom photos. Those areas have been blurred out in those photos rather than attempt any more elaborate retouching.
