Jones and the school for native children is underthe care of Miss F. J. Work. The majority of the children in the schoolfor natives are inmates of the home maintained here by the KansasYearly Meeting of Friends. From Douglas the vessel steamed up Lynn Canal to Dyea at thehead of the Chilkoot Inlet. This was the first time that the Topelcahad ever been to the head of the inlet, and she felt her way along verycautiously. After careful sounding we anchored at about 6,30 p. m.Around us were magnificent snow-capped mountains, and just oppositea noisy waterfall leaped headlong down the face of the cliff. As the water shoals very rapidly toward the head ofthe bay, the Topelia had anchored a couple of miles from shore, and thehorses had a long distance to swim. By this time it was dark and thestruggles of the animals churned the chilly waters into displays ofphosphorescent light. On May 3 we touched at Killisnoo. A public school was maintainedhere for a number of years. In February, 1893, the schoolhouse wasdestroyed by fire, and the Bureau of Education has not been able torebuild it, owing to heavy reductions in the Congressional appropriationfor education iu Alaska. Most of the children in the village attendthe school of the Eusso-Greek Church. The Alaskan Oil and Guano Company, which is engaged in packingherring and manufacturing oil and fertilizer, has its works at this place.The annual product of their factory is 1,0
