The squad shown here on the left is presumed to be the Seacliff Asylum Cricket Team, which was made up of staff from the asylum. If they were anywhere near is good is their football team – who famously won the inaugural Chatham Cup in 1923 – then they would’ve been a very handy unit indeed. The image on the right is of a match being played on the grounds of the asylum. The Gothic inspired asylum building can be seen in the background. When built in the late 19th century, it was the largest building in the country, noted for its scale and extravagant architecture. The image of the team is from 1910, however we are unsure as to the date of the image where the match it taking place. The Seacliff Asylum was a psychiatric hospital based north of Dunedin. These images are based in the Dunedin Office of Archives New Zealand.
