Summary[edit]

Description
English: The right-hand (western) window of the Schnewlin Chapel in the choir of the Freiburg Minster, strongly painted over in 1870-71 by Heinrich Helmle (1829-1909), dates to 1525. According to an inscription, it was financed by the Schnewlin Gresser Endowment in memory of the Freiburg patrician and mayor Johannes Schnewlin, who died in 1347. The artistic and religious theme of the window is St. John the Baptist, Schnewlin's name patron. The window's formal similarity to that of the University Chapel suggests that they were likely designed by the Hans Burgkmair circle.

Schnewlin is depicted to the right, garbed in the colors of his family coat of arms, visible to the left, and kneeling before the towering figure of John the Baptist, who is wearing a red mantle over his fur coat. John points with his right hand to the Lamb with the cross flag, which reposes on a book held by his left hand. When John recognized Jesus as the messiah and termed him the lamb of God: "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." (John 1:29)

The decapitation of the martyr is depicted on the left-hand side, with John kneeling before a tower. The two scenes are set in a shared with a mountainous landscape and a deep blue sky beneath Renaissance arches with light-colored ornaments.
