Title
English: A Saxon Coin Struck at Winchester
Description
English: A depiction of the obverse (front) of a Saxon coin struck at Winchester between 958 and 975, from the the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of "Hamp Shire" (Hampshire), the eighth in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales..., copied from figure 33 of Tabula II Nummi Saxonici on Page 139 of Obadiah Walker's "Notes on the Saxon Coins" appended to the English translation of William Camden's Britannica. Its note there states "33. The thirty-third, Edgar, son of King Edmund, peaceably enjoyed the fruits of the labours and dangers of his predecessors. A man admired by all, both foreigners and natives, for his great piety, justice, prudence, and industry in governing the kingdom. Sine praelio omnia gubernavit prout ipse voluit. ["Without warfare he governed all as he wished."] The reverse is, Leofsig moneta Hamptonensis."

The coin is a silver penny from the 10th century, when Winchester was the chief capital of Wessex and then England. The obverse shows a portrait in profile with the Anglicized and abbreviated Medieval Latin legend + EADGAR REX ANGLOꝜ, "Edgar King of the English" (Eadgar Rex Anglorum).
Notes: London: Sold by H. Moll over-against Devereux-Court in the Strand; Tho. Bowles, Print and Map-Seller near the Chapter-House in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and J. Bowles Print and Map-Seller over-against Stocks-Market. 1724.
