Title
English: Saxon Coins
Description
English: A silver penny of Edward the Confessor ("Mr Thoresby's Famous Unic, Supposed to Be a Coin of St Edwin, ... a Penny of Edward the Confessor"), one of the Saxon coins decorating the margin of Moll's map of Suffolk, sold separately and as Map 21 in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales..., copied from Figure 38 of Tabula IV Nummi Saxonici on Page 147 of Obadiah Walker's "Notes on the Saxon Coins" appended to the English translation of William Camden's Britannica.

Notes:
Camden's illustration and Walker's note misidentify the coin as belonging to Edwin of Northumbria, the later stating "38. The thirty-eighth is Edwin rex. This seems to have been the glorious King of the Northumbers; who being forced out of his country by a cruel and tyrannical usurper, betook himself to Redwald King of the East Angles; who also after many promises and threats, agreed to deliver him up to his enemy. At which time the worthy Edwin was comforted by a message from God, promising him safety, his kingdom, &c. And laying his right hand upon Edwin's head, had him remember that sign; which when it came to pass, he should receive the gospel. This Edwin faithfully promised, and afterwards faithfully performed, as may be read in venerable Bede in his second book of the Eccl. History, which in greatest part is concerning this valiant, victorious, religious prince. His conversion fell out in the year of Christ 627; the reverse is Sefwel on Eoferwic." The actual coin's ...AD... (1) or ...ER... are presented as ...I... or ...II... and the D misidentified as an N. See e.g. this similar coin. Moll's engraving remains close to Camden's but mistakenly presents Camden's SEFIIEL or SEFVEL using the anachronous character W. The coin appears elsewhere as reading SEEWEL, SCE⅃EL, SCEVEL, and SCIAE and as connected to the moneyer Scula and the later English name Savile (2).
