Title
English: Saxon Coins
Description
English: A DOROB-C silver penny of Egbert, one of the Saxon coins decorating the margins of Moll's map of Huntingdonshire, sold separately and as Map 24 in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales..., copied from Figure 4 of Tabula II Nummi Saxonici on Page 139 of Obadiah Walker's "Notes on the Saxon Coins" appended to the English translation of William Camden's Britannica. The obverse inscription is garbled by taking the torso of the portrait as two letters. The reverse inscription is similarly gibberish, but presumably intends either Diormod or Dealla, both known to have minted coins during Egbert's reign.

Notes:
Obverse: + ECGB⅄RIᚻHT BEX [intending ECGBEARHT REX, King Egbert]
Reverse: + DEBLS MONETA [garbled but probably intending DIORMOD MNET with a ligatured NE and capital T with overbar, Diormod Moneta, Diormod the Moneyer or Money of Diormod, a prolific moneyer at Canterbury under Egbert; it might possibly intend DEALA MONETA, Dealla Moneta, Dealla the Moneyer or Money of Dealla, another moneyer attested under Egbert's reign] and DOR C [Dorobernia Civitas, Canterbury City]
Walker's note states "4. The fourth, Ecgberht, partly by conquest, partly by the submission of other kingdoms, united all into one dominion, calling it England; because, as it is said, himself, the King of the West Saxons, was an Angle. It seems that almighty God saw it necessary, for resisting the violence of the heathenish pirates, to unite the intire force of all the nation, yet little enough to defend themselves. He was a prince (though but of small stature) extraordinary both for wisdom and valour; for being banished by Brithric, he applied himself to Charles the Great, who bestowed upon him a considerable post in his army. And he was signally blessed with a numerous succession of most worthy princes of his family and blood; which indeed was necessary for the preservation of the nation, its peace, and unity."

See, inter alia, Blunt and Howorth.
