Summary[edit]

Description
English: Five cartoons depicting repercussions of the 1904 butchers' strike.
  • Leftmost, no title: a dog weeps because his diet includes only biscuits and no meat
  • Second from left,"Russia May Have To Go Hungry": a bearded man labeled Russia examines a message which reads "No More Meatski from the United Stateski On Account of Butchers Strikeoff"; meanwhile, he is stabbed from behind by a sword labeled Japan.
  • Central, "Bossy Feels a Heap Safer": an anthropomorphic cow in overalls sits on a bench with a bucket of mint juleps, fanning itself.
  • Second from right, "Brain Food for Mr. C. People": in a restaurant, a customer (representing "the Common People") perplexedly examines a menu whose contents are all "Fish", as a waiter looks on. The title "Brain Food" alludes to the then-common idea that eating fish increased one's intelligence.
  • Rightmost, "And at Home he Gets the Sawdust Fritter Diet": a woman says "This is all for you, dearest!", and shows her husband several crates of unpalatable replacement food (labeled "asbestos butter wafers", "baled hay biscuits - takes the place of meat!", "condensed grass", "shredded alfalfa", and "clover"). The husband says "Oh, Fish!" Satterfield's bear mascot looks on, and says "They'll be eatin' me next!"
