| Description |
English: Sarajevo siege, winter of 1992-1993. Pedestrians and a solitary car hurry across the Skenderija junction on Marshal Tito Street. Stacked shipping containers (far left) give partial protection from snipers. (People are shot through the gaps. Also, heavy rounds pass through the containers.) Marshal Tito Street curves out of sight at left and turns into Vojvode Putnika -- 'Sniper Alley' -- where pedestrians and vehicles are fired on from high-rise buildings in Grbavica. Right fork (white car) is Ulica Kranjčevića, where you can reach the Holiday Inn across muddy grass, which some say is the most dangerous piece of open ground. Street at far right is Ðure Ðakovića. It runs uphill, giving snipers in elevated locations clear aim over the shipping containers. Christian Maréchal photo |
