DescriptionSangre de Cristo Mtns., Westcliffe, Colorado - panoramio.jpg |
Sangre de Cristo Mtns., Westcliffe, Colorado The photograph depicts the east front of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, consisting chiefly of sandstones and conglomerates that were deposited at the base of the ancestral Rocky Mountains during the Late Paleozoic Era (roughly 250 to 300 million years ago. The present mountains were formed during the Laramide Orogeny, dated between 35 and 80 million years ago, which deformed the Paleozoic beds by folding and faulting them. The Wet Mountain Valley, where Westcliffe is located, lies at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and contains thick gravels deposited during the last few million years as the range was eroded by streams and glaciers. The photo was taken from the south edge of Westcliffe shortly after sunrise June 5, 2009. The first orographic clouds of the day appear at the top of the photograph. |
