Summary[edit]

Description

Russia and Brazil Building, Mission Revival style east facade — of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, Balboa Park, San Diego, California.

  • The Russia and Brazil Building was designed by Carleton Winslow, and the sculpture is the work of H. L. Schmohl.
  • First called the Indian Arts Building — the Russia and Brazil Building, holds an important position to the architectural student in the historical sequence of styles represented in the various buildings. Especially is this true of the east front, facing the main plaza of the Exposition.
  • Here the arcade surrounding the plaza forms an atrium to the building in front of which is the elevation, or fachada, consisting of a central arch flanked by two bell gables, recalling the Sanctuario the Guadalahara, Mexico. This latter building, build by the Francisan Fathers, undoubtedly influenced the padre missioners in their architectural efforts in the California missions.
