Summary[edit]

Description
English: Phra Chulachomklao Fortress, commonly known as “Pom Phra Chun”, was originally named Laem Fah Pha fortress. It is located at the mouth of the Chao Phraya Rivery in Laem Fah Pha subdistrict, Phra Samut Chedi district. With suitable strategic location to protect potential invasion, King Rama V ordered construction of this fortress, together with installation of western-style cannons and seven 155-millimetre Armstrong guns, then called “Suea Mob” guns, as main artillery.

Started in 1884, the construction was supervised by Phraya Yutthayothin or André du Plessis de Richelieu, a Danish naval officer who later asked for a change of the name to Phra Chulachom klao. Even though the construction was not fully completed, this fortress was used to battle against the French fleet during the so called “Franco-Siamese War”in April, 112 R.E. (1893).

A Monument of King Rama V was built at the front of the fortress in 1992in order to commemorate the strong determination of King Rama V to protect sovereignty of Thailand. Under the monument is a Naval History Park with history of the Royal Maeklong Warship and a collection of artillery on display.
