Summary[edit]

Description Detail of inscription on front face of the Illtud Cross or Samson's Cross, the gritstone base of a Celtic cross at St Illtyd's Church, Llantwit Major, South Glamorgan, Wales. 10th century. Latin inscription reading "SAMSON POSUIT HANC CRUCEM PRO ANIMA EIUS" ("Samson placed his cross for his soul") on the front; and "ILTUTI SAMSON REGIS SAMUEL EBISAR" ("For the soul of Illtud, Samson the King, Samuel and Ebisar" on the reverse. Samson's Cross is often confused with Abbott Samson's Pillar Cross, also at St Illtyd's Church.
