| Description |
Sambro Island Lighthouse. There is also a spot on the island which looks to be carved out of the rocks called the “Devil’s Staircase” The story goes that the devil walks up the formation out of the water and walks around the island. The large rock has only recently have broken off, you use to be able to walk under it. The staircase is not an intrusive vein of dark rock in the granite as it might appear but is actually a very large flat slab of the Halifax formation that is embedded in the granite, a kind of giant xenolith. A xenolith is a rock fragment which becomes enveloped in a larger rock during the latter's development and hardening. |
