Collection of mantetas, popularly called sambenitos, exhibited in the Diocesan Museum of Tuy (Pontevedra).

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The mantle is a square canvas, in the lower half of which is the inscription of the name, surname, employment and crime of the convicted by the Inquisition, with the expression of the year. In general, the top part is painted with the blade of the sanbenito or the flames of the bonfire. The manteta is hung in the church to which the convict belongs as a parishioner, in order to perpetuate the memory of his infamy. Sometimes the mantetas are called sambenitos, because in the first place the original sanbenitos that the condemned had worn were hung, although later these were replaced by the mantetas.
