Summary[edit]
DescriptionSalk Institute outline of laboratory floor and Vierendeel truss.jpg |
English: A section of a laboratory building at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, designed by Louis Kahn. The three laboratory floors are unobstructed by support columns. Above each laboratory floor is a service floor to handle air ducts (some of which are shown), piping, cables, etc. The horizontal ladder-like structures that encase the service floors are Vierendeel trusses, which were designed by August Komendant, a structural engineer. The trusses are made of pre-stressed concrete and are supported by embedded steel cables in the shape a curve similar to that of cables that support a suspension bridge. |
