Summary[edit]

Description The Salem United Methodist Church at 211 West 129th Street on the corner of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City was originally built as the Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church in 1887, and was designed by John Rochester Thomas in the Romanesque Revival style. It was enlarged in 1890. The church had the largest auditorium of any Protestant church in the city before the building of Riverside Church. The Salem United Methodist congregation was founded in 1902 as a mission of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, and became independent in 1908. It purchased its current home in 1923. having previously worshiped at 102 West 133rd Street. The renovation of the church in 1949-53 was overseen by Joseph Judge and Samuel Snodgrass.
