| Description |
I look at the head of this tortoise and imagine the head of a huge brontosaurus of long ago munching the foliage of tall, prehistoric trees. I'm sure GTs have a powerful bite but they never use it on us. I have seen the males 'nipping' at females to make them turn to leave thus providing the desired mating position. Crafty little guys :) Large, female Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) at Smyrna Dunes Park, New Smyrna Beach, FL munching away on the local greens. She is a about 15 inches long and may well be older than I am. (Not telling :) Speaks well for a vegetarian diet. It would be seriously unpleasant to be bitten by a Gopher Tortoise but there is no record of it ever happening. |
