Summary[edit]
DescriptionSaint Warna's Well - geograph.org.uk - 828646.jpg |
English: Saint Warna's Well Also called Santa Warna's Well this is a very early well, the name coming from that of a 2nd or 3rd Century Holy Woman who sailed here in a coracle from Ireland to convert the population to Christianity.
Legend has it that islanders would at time of need throw broken pins into the well as an offering to the Spirit of The Well (be that Santa Warna or an older Deity) in order to summon winds to wreck ships on the island. I have heard of a St Agnes prayer of more recent (possibly medieval) times which is along the lines of: "We pray not that this night will bring a wreck, but if it is your will that there is, we pray that it be on our shores" No doubt with more poetry than that! |
