English: "Saint Francis Xavier taking leave of King John III", dated 1635, by José de Avelar Rebelo. The painting represents St. Francis Xavier taking leave of King John III of Portugal, right before his departure to India on the 9th of April 1541. The Jesuit is knelt before the king while he extends his hand to greet the monarch. Behind him is Fr. Simão Rodrigues de Azevedo, the Portuguese Jesuit who initiated the Society of Jesus in Portugal. The king is surrounded by noblemen and clergy at the royal palace in Lisbon. The pair of this painting depicts Pope Paul III receiving St. Francis Xavier and His Companions. Português: "São Francisco Xavier despedindo-se do Rei D. João III", datado de 1635, por José de Avelar Rebelo. O quadro representa S. Francisco Xavier despedindo-se de D. João III, antes da sua partida para a Índia a 9 de Abril de 1541. O Jesuíta está ajoelhado perante o rei, de mão estendida para o monarca. Atrás dele, econtra-se o Frei Simão Rodrigues de Azevedo, o Jesuíta Português que instaurou a Sociedade de Jesus em Portugal. O Rei está rodeado pela nobreza e o clero, no Paço Real de Lisboa.
