Summary[edit]

Description

The "C. P. Huntington" was the first locomotive built for the Southern Pacific Railroad in California. It is a 4-2-4T (2A2) steam locomotive. It was built in 1863 for the Central Pacific Railroad, and transferred to the newly-formed Southern Pacific Railroad in 1871. It is now in the Califonria State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.

Collis P. Huntington (1821-1900) was one of the "Big Four," who controlled the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific. He was probably the leading figure in the railroads, though he was vice president of both railroads. Leland Stanford was president, probably because of his political influence. He had been Governor of California and later became a U.S. Senator. The others were Mark Hopkins (treasurer) and Charles Crocker (construction supervisor), All of them left estates of $20-40 million or more, a huge sum in the late 1800s.

The Central Pacific was the western partner in the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S., which was completed in 1865. A golden spike in Promontory, Utah, marked the completion. The Southern Pacific Railroad became a major economic force in California for decades.
