Quincke Tube apparatus for demonstrating interference effects for sound waves.

Summary

[edit]
Description Quincke or Herschel-Quincke apparatus for demonstrating the interference of sound waves. A speaker at the bottom plays a single frequency (or pitch) of sound into the plastic tube at the bottom of a rectangle made from tubing. The sound wave is split into two at the junction of two blue tubes. The two waves travel through the left and right halves of the rectangle and recombine at the French horn bell at the top. Adjusting the length of the right half of the rectangle markedly changes the loudness of sound emitted from the bell. The frequency (or pitch) isn't changed. The first version of this apparatus was made by Georg Hermann Quincke; the apparatus in the photograph was made by Sam Sampere at Syracuse University.
