Description

This is the Douglas Local at Crook Tunnel between Douglas and Bisbee, Arizona, circa 1980. This was a complete grab shot and unfortunately, one of the very few views you'll see of Crook Tunnel.

In a 1901 line change, the El Paso & Southwestern moved their mainline to Douglas a bit further south, almost touching the Mexican border in places. This required a 900 foot tunnel, the only one on the South Line in Arizona. Soon after construction, the tunnel collapsed after being opened to traffic, and the east end was lined in concrete.

I had wandered off to Douglas one day to try and follow the Douglas branch, what was left of the EP&SW and the South Line, and I was on a dirt road between the track and the border.

I saw smoke in the distance, had no idea where the track actually was, and just parked and ran northward. I stopped running when I got to the top of the cut and the Douglas Local burst out of the bore. Talk about a grab shot!

This was typical of the SP Arizona copper locals. Either a GP40-2/TEBU sandwich or a gaggle of freshly rebuilt GP35E's, or both.
