Summary[edit]

Description This silver 8 reales coin or piece of eight was minted in Mexico in 1805 and was used throughout the Spanish American empire. These coins used to be cut into "bits" to make smaller change in many colonial countries of all the colonial empires world wide, not just the Spanish. Though by the time this coin was struck in 1805 the practice of chopping the coin into quarters (2 bits) or halves (4 bits) was pretty well obsolete as smaller half reale, one reale, two reale and four reale coins were also minted at the time. This particular piece is called a "pillar dollar or peso"
