A NASA spacecraft designed to globally track soil moisture waits at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California for its date with space on January 29, 2015. Launching on a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket, the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) instrument will provide the most accurate, highest-resolution measurements ever obtained from space of moisture in the top 2 inches (5 centimeters) of soil.
