Summary[edit]

Description Pictured is a lump of silver slag removed from a charred cashbox in San Francisco after the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. The silver coinage melted, but due to their higher melting-point the nickels retained their details and were embedded in molten metal. A stray screw was apparently also in the box and was entombed as well. This interesting artifact illustrates the enormous heat generated by the fires that swept through the city after the quake.
