Description
English: ... as Captain Joseph J. Spalding, of Indianapolis, Indiana operates on the left hand being held by PFC. Rasmus Rasmussen of Douglas, Arizona, at this portable surgical hospital. PFC. Salvatore Tranchina, of Brooklyn, New York, the surgical technician, is assisting on the right. Chen had a piece of shrapnel in his left hand and right knee. He was wounded at 1200, admitted to the hospital at 1500. The enlisted men of the unit act as nurses. This picture was taken 6 miles back of the front lines. Photo Source: U.S. National Archives.
