Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sérénade au clair de lune ("Moonlight Serenade"), pastel by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer, 56.5 x 81.2 cm. It depicts a canal of Venice with gondolas in a magical and dream-like atmosphere, with orbs of light and hazy elements that evokes the impressions of Lévy-Dhurmer's memory. According to the auction essay ([1]), Lucien first traveled to Venice in 1895, in which year he first published a painting showing a canal of Venice. According to Artcurial ([2]), Lucien made other trips to Venice in the years of 1904, 1906, 1910 and the 1920s, and in a 1927 exposition in Bruxelles, a critic mentioned Lévy-Dhurmer's paintings of Venice. As according to the date of his other paintings of Venice, it is most probable to have been composed between 1910 and near the end of World War I.
