Summary[edit]

Description
English: The barn was built in 1837 by Samuel Rutherford on East Hansel Road in Minooka, Illinois. By 1848 it was used for housing mules which were used to tow shallow draft canal boats along the canal. Adjacent to the canal and running its full length was a raised dirt path for the mules. Photos of the interior and floorplans of the barn can be seen at the Library of Congress website.

The canal was completed in 1848, linking Lake Michigan at Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle, which subsequently linked to the Mississippi River. This 175 year old canal was a critical transportation route to provide waterway navigation from the eastern U.S. states via the Erie Canal with the western U.S. territory and the Gulf of Mexico for westward expansion. It made Chicago the central transportation hub to the west and consequently the fastest growing city in world history.

The mule barn is registered with the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS).
