to dineat Ruskins to-day. Your affectionate D. G. R. 96 RUSKIN TO ROSSETTI 40. John Ruskin to Dante Rossetti. The drawing termed end of Blackfriars Bridge must have been a preparatory drawing for the pic-ture Found. (Denmark Hill. ^ .. ? l855-) Dear Rossetti, I expect Kingsley, the Alton Locke, tocome out here on Monday in order to be con-verted to Praeraphaelitism. I have borrowedone of Inchbolds pictures, but I cant showhim anything with feeling in it. Could youlend me that end of Blackfriars Bridge—theblack drawing, I mean—till Tuesday; and, ifyou have any other ideas by you that you couldspare for me to talk over with him, it wouldbe, I think, a thoroughly proper thing to sendthem for him to see—I mean by proper itwould be wrong not. For he ought to under-stand what sort of work you and all of us areabout. I can show him Miss SiddaFs, but he maythink them morbid. Please dont be ridiculousand say youVe nothing fit to be seen. I willbring what you send back with me on Tuesday,

It was, I believe,in July 1855 that Mr. Woodward asked Rossetti toundertake some designing work for the decorationsof the Museum, and the present letter seems toshow that Miss Siddal was joined in the invitation;neither of them, however, assented. The view whichRuskin here expresses about Beatrice is one that hasobtained no little currency of late years, viz., thatthere really was a Beatrice whom Dante loved, butthat she was not the same person as Beatrice Porti-nari, who eventually married Simon de Bardi. Thetranslation mentioned in the P.S. seems to be Ros-settis version of Da
