| Description |
English: Ruddy darters (Sympetrum sanguinem) 'in cop'. This is part of the mating and egg-laying process for dragonflies and damselflies. The male clasps the female behind her eyes, she bends round to fertilise her eggs (see 207384) and then the eggs are laid - in some species, such as these, the male stays attached, to protect against the female mating with another. The female was flicking down the lay the eggs on the vegetation at the edge of the pond. The eggs don't hatch until covered with water. |
