| Description |
English: Royston Church From the north.
Royston Parish Church occupies the site of a Priory of Augustinian or Black Canons. This was founded in the late 12th century and was dedicated to St John the Baptist and St Thomas of Canterbury. In 1536, the monastery was dissolved and the nave torn down. However, the people of the town purchased what remained and in 1540 the parish of Royston was created and the church was dedicated to St John the Baptist. Extensive restoration of the church was carried out in the 19th century, and the flint casing of the tower dates from the 1870s. |
