Summary[edit]

Description
English: Vanguard-class submarine HMS Victorious returning to her home port at HMNB Clyde, Faslane, Scotland on Wednesday, April 4, 2013, ending her 100th Vanguard-class deterrent patrol.

As the submarine finished its 88 day mission, earlier in the day the Prime Minister spent time with crew members on board the giant strategic missile submarine and visited the vessel’s operations room, messes and living spaces.     The Royal Navy has operated the UK’s Continuous at Sea Deterrent since 1967 when the first SSBN – or Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear – HMS Resolution began patrolling armed with the Polaris missile system.     In 1996 HMS Vanguard, the first submarine armed with the Trident missile system, arrived on the Clyde and took over deterrent patrol duties from the Resolution Class.  HMS Victorious’ patrol marks the 100th successful mission for the submarines in an unbroken chain stretching back 17 years.
