1,000 views on 27th December 2013 Prior to 1901, the Force wore a very large oval Victorian Crown-top helmet badge, which was - as with many Scottish (and indeed UK forces) - replaced by something a bit smaller following the death of Queen Victoria. In the same way as the helmet plate's centre-piece was a rather uninventive number, so the Force (being a 'joint County' one) had no distinctive County coat of arms to use as the centrepiece to a new cap badge. Thus the centre is a shield with entwined initials "R & C" (Ross and Cromarty). Perhaps the lack of a Force title in the belt around the shield was the dubiety about the Force's name, which could be any of "Ross-shire Constabulary" "Ross County Police" "Ross and Cromarty Constabulary". The photograph of the helmeted officer shows him with a helmet worded Ross-shire Constabulary but his collar insignia RCP stood for Ross County Police. (Although Cromartyshire men had been effectively part of the Ross-shire force for many years it was only in 1889 that the two Counties were officially merged). This might account for Chief Constable MacAulay introducing the "R&C" logo, which would remain unchanged on the cap badge until the badge was replaced by the Scottish National Constabulary crest ("Semper vigilo") in 1930 or so. |
