Summary[edit]

Description

In 1865 the Force provided its two (former Burgh of Dingwall) officers with belt buckles which carried the Burgh coat of arms in the centre, but with the force title as "Ross-shire Constabulary".

Here, two years on, it is likely that a combination of circumstances result in EVERYBODY in the force being issued with a similar buckle.

Chances are that the Government Inspector concluded that "uniform means the same" and thus ALL officer should be identically turned out. The Town Council of Dingwall would also be less than happy if an officer patrolling the town (perhaps taken in from the rural area at short notice) was not wearing a buckle with the Burgh coat of arms on.

The easiest way to sort out the matter was to equip every officer in the force with the same buckle - even if it did have Dingwall's coat of arms on it (which if realised by the residents of other Burghs such as Stornoway and Tain would have cause a bit of displeasure)

The increase in staff numbers would at least be partly explained by the fact that the force had taken over responsibility for Cromartyshire Constabulary (and its 2 officers) in 1867, albeit the two forces were theortically still separate entities.
