Summary[edit]

Description
English: Photograph of Rosewell Plantation, Gloucester County, Virginia, taken sometime following the Civil War. The Page family had sold the mansion, said to be the finest home built in Colonial America, in 1838, family tombs and all, for some $12,000. Subsequently the owner stripped the house of many of its decorative elements, even cutting old cedars which had once lined the driveway for firewood. The home, built of brick and marble imported from England, never resumed its former glory, and later burned in 1916. This black-and-white photograph by an unknown photographer appeared in the book "Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them: With Genealogies of the Various Families Mentioned," written by Thomas Allen Glenn, published at Philadelphia, Pa., by Henry T. Coates & Company, 1899.
