Summary[edit]

Description
English: Romanesque Font, St. Mary's Portchester The most beautiful feature inside the remarkable Norman church of St.Mary's in Portchester is almost certainly this font. Thought to be contemporaneous with the church itself this font is nearly 900 years old and displays intricate carving. As may be suspected from both the colour difference and the sharpness of the carving, the lower part of the font displaying the columns is considerably more modern, dating from 1888. Apparently the original base, described as having the baptism of Christ sculptured upon it was still in existence in 1845 - I wonder where that is now and if it will ever turn up. This information from British History Online, where you can read much more about the church and the town of Portchester - see http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=41948&strquery=Portchester#s8
