Title
Roman lorica segmentata armour
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap fitting, probably a fragment of Lorica Segmentata armour of Roman date. It is missing both ends due to old breaks. The surviving fragment is flat, rectangular in form with a slightly pitted dark green/brown patina on all surfaces. On the front face it has incised or punched decoration comprising a double grooved border within which are two central circular rivet holes. One rivet hole contains the corroded remains of an iron rivet and both are surrounded by incised double concentric circles. Between the two rivet holes are two smaller punched ring and dot motifs. The back face of the plate is flat and undecorated. It measures 22.18mm in length, 15.93mm in width, 1.52mm in thickness, and 2.38g in weight.

This is a strap fitting or buckle plate from lorica segmentata armour. It finds parallels in examples published by Chapman (2005: e.g. nos. Lc38, Lc39, Lc44) and is of Roman date, c.43-410 AD.
