Title |
Roman key (locking) |
||
Description |
English: A complete copper alloy 'ring key', from a rotary lock, dating to the late Roman period (AD 200 to AD 400).
The ring key consists of a circular shaped hoop, 'D' shaped in cross section. From the hoop projects a rectangular shank, more square in section. The key bit projects at 90 degrees from the shank, also rectangular in plan and cross section. The bit has two teeth, thicker than the main body, divided from each other with an incision on the both sides. When viewed straight on, one face of the key is plain and undecorated. Viewed from the other side, the face is decorated with incisions. The vertical shank has a small, square depression in the centre and a straight, lateral incision emphasising where the shank meets the hoop. On the bit, the side face of the first tooth bears a deep diagonal incision running from top right to bottom left and a less deep incision running from top left to bottom right, interupted by the deeper incision. The second tooth is narrower in width than the first and bears only one incision, running from top right to bottom left. This incision is not as deep as the corrosponding one on the first tooth, but is deeper than the incision that goes the other way. The ring-key measures 36.7mm in length, 27.5mm in with and weighs 17.45g. The hoop is 21.7mm in diameter and is irregular in thickness varying from 2.2mm to 3.3mm. The shank is 5.6mm in thickness. The bit is 18.8mm in length, 11.5mm in width and 6.4mm in thickness. The ring key is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina on the outside faces. The inner surface of the hoop is uneven, with patches of a reddish patina and areas of surface loss. Ring-keys have been recorded in the excavations in Colchester, although not particularly similar to this example having less shank, and have been dated to the 3rd and 4th Centuries AD. They are associated with small boxes and caskets of personal possessions rather than doors or cupboards (Crummy 1983: page 84-85). Reference: |
